What Is Freeze, Float and Slide in JoSAA Counselling?

Once you receive a seat through JoSAA counselling, you are asked to respond to your allotment by choosing one of three options: Freeze, Float, or Slide. This step is compulsory. If you do not respond by the deadline, your allotted seat will be cancelled, and you will be removed from further rounds.

Most candidates appearing for JEE Main 2027 counselling are aware of these terms but are often unsure which option to pick. This article explains what each option means, how it works, and when you should use it.

What Is Freeze in JoSAA Counselling?

Freeze means you are completely satisfied with the seat you have been allotted and do not wish to participate in any further rounds of JoSAA counselling.

When you choose Freeze, your seat is confirmed. You simply need to complete the fee payment and document verification process and then report to the allotted institute for admission. The counselling process ends for you at this point.

One important thing to know is that if you are allotted your first choice, the seat is automatically frozen. You will not be given the Float or Slide option in this case since there is nothing higher on your list to upgrade to.

Choose Freeze when you are happy with the college and branch you have received and do not want to take any risks in future rounds.

What Is Float in JoSAA Counselling?

Float means you accept the allotted seat but want to be considered for a better college or a better branch at a different college in the upcoming rounds of JEE Main 2027 counselling.

When you select Float, you hold on to your current seat as a backup. In the next round, the system will check if any of the choices ranked above your current allotment in your choice list have become available. If a better seat is available, you will automatically be upgraded to it, and your previous seat will be released. If no upgrade is possible, you retain your current seat.

The key point here is that Float considers choices above your current allotment across any institute in your filled choice list, not just within the same college.

Choose Float when: You have received a decent seat, but your preferred college or branch is higher in your choice list, and you want to try for an upgrade in the remaining rounds.

What Is Slide in JoSAA Counselling?

Slide works similarly to Float but with one important restriction. When you choose Slide, you are asking for an upgrade in the branch only within the same institute you have already been allotted.

For example, if you have been allotted Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy, but you had also listed Computer Science at NIT Trichy above it, choosing Slide will allow the system to check if CSE at NIT Trichy becomes available in the next round. If it does, you move to CSE. If it does not, you stay in Mechanical. You will not be moved to any other institute under the Slide option.

Choose Slide when: You are happy with the institute you received, but want a better branch within that same college.

Which Option Should You Choose?

There is no single right answer. It depends entirely on where you are in your choice list and what you are willing to accept.

If you have received exactly the college and branch you wanted, Freeze is the right call. There is no point remaining in further rounds if you are already satisfied.

If you got a decent seat but know your preferred options are ranked higher in your list, Float gives you a chance to upgrade without losing your current seat as a safety net.

If you love the institute you got but prefer a different branch there, Slide is the smarter option. It keeps you in the running for a better programme without risking a transfer to a completely different college.

One thing to remember during JoSAA counselling 2027 is that in the last round, only the Freeze option is available. Float and Slide are not offered in the final round. If you do not select Freeze in the last round, your seat will be cancelled.

Can You Change Your Option in the Next Round?

Yes. After every round of JoSAA seat allotment, you can choose again based on your new allotment. If you floated and received an upgraded seat, you can freeze it or continue floating for a better one.
