The JEE Main Maths Syllabus 2027 covers 14 units from Class 11 and 12 NCERT, as prescribed by NTA in the official Information Bulletin. Mathematics is widely considered the most scoring section in JEE Main for well-prepared candidates. Students who consistently score 75 or above in Maths push their overall score into the 97th to 99th percentile range.

Among all units, Calculus alone contributes 27 to 33% of the Mathematics section, making it the single most important area to master. Algebra and Coordinate Geometry together account for another 35 to 40%, meaning these three areas collectively make up nearly 65 to 70% of the entire Mathematics paper. Mathematical Reasoning was largely removed, and Mathematical Induction was significantly reduced in the 2024 revision, shifting more weightage to Calculus and Coordinate Geometry.

JEE Main Maths Syllabus: Class 11 vs Class 12

The topics from class 12 carry slightly higher weightage due to the dominance of Calculus and Probability. However, Class 11 topics like Conic Sections, Complex Numbers, and Permutations and Combinations are consistently high-weightage chapters that cannot be skipped. For Class 11, Conic Sections has the highest single-chapter weightage in the entire Maths syllabus.

Skipping any of these chapters can directly cost 8 to 16 marks. With Section B now having 5 compulsory NVQs (no longer optional), candidates cannot afford to leave high-weightage chapters partially prepared. A weak spot in Integral Calculus or Matrices now shows up in Section B, whether you like it or not.

JEE Main Maths Preparation Strategy

  • Master Calculus first: Integration, Differentiation and Differential Equations together form 30 to 35% of the paper. These chapters require consistent daily practice over months, not weeks. Start Calculus early and keep practising throughout preparation.
  • Do not neglect Coordinate Geometry: Conic Sections, Circles, and 3D Geometry, which can contribute 6 to 8 questions. These are formula-heavy chapters that reward regular revision. Maintain a formula sheet for all conic section standard results.
  • Algebra is the foundation: Strong Algebra, especially Complex Numbers, Matrices and Determinants, and Permutations and Combinations, is essential for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Weak Algebra drags down performance in Calculus and Coordinate Geometry as well.
  • Probability is high return for low effort: Most JEE Main Probability questions are direct applications of Bayes’ theorem, conditional probability, or standard distributions. This is one of the easiest high-weightage chapters to prepare in a short time.
  • Solve previous year papers topic-wise: Mathematics has the highest percentage of concept-repeat questions. Solve all JEE Main Maths PYQs from 2014 to 2026 chapter-wise before attempting full mock tests.
  • Time management in the exam: Maths is time-consuming. Candidates should attempt the easier Algebra and Probability questions first, reserve Calculus for the middle of the exam, and leave complex Coordinate Geometry problems for last.
  • Solve mock tests: NTA provides the JEE Main mock tests for each section on its official website. It helps students get familiar with the pattern, question types, and monitor weak chapters.

How does the compulsory Section B pattern affect Maths preparation?

Earlier, candidates could attempt any 5 out of 10 NVQs and skip tough topics. Now all 5 NVQs are compulsory with -1 negative marking, meaning you can no longer afford weak areas in high-weightage chapters like Matrices, Calculus or Coordinate Geometry.

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main Maths, unlike Chemistry?

No. JEE Main Maths requires additional problem practice from reference books like R.D. Sharma or Arihant Calculus. NCERT builds the concept base, but JEE Main Maths tests speed and application, which only come from solving a large volume of varied problems.

If we just cover the 12th class maths JEE syllabus only, can we expect to score 40+ in the JEE Mains?

No, the chances of scoring 40 plus in JEE Main Maths by covering only the Class 12 syllabus are very low. Although Class 12 topics technically account for over 50 per cent of the question paper, the strict negative marking system leaves you with an incredibly narrow margin for error. Also, if you are aiming for top-tier engineering colleges like premier NITs and IIITs, a 40 mark target is insufficient.
